India’s first needleless vaccine against the Wuhan virus, ZyCoV-D, has been launched in Patna, Bihar.

On the 5th of February, Saturday, the Bihar Government rolled out the needle-free Plasmid DNA vaccine for the eligible adult population of the State.

The vaccine launch is a relief to people who are yet to receive doses against the Wuhan virus, due to their fear of needles.

As of now, the vaccine would be administered at three vaccination centers in Patna, the Capital City of Bihar. The three centers are; Patliputra Sports Complex, Polytechnic College, and Gurunanak Bhawan. In addition, Zycov D would be given in three doses with a gap of 28 days between each dose.

Launched by Gujarat-based Zydus Cadila, the vaccine has been approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI.) The approval of the vaccine came after studying the report of the efficiency of the vaccine, which is said to be 66 %. Zydus Cadila’s vaccine was developed in partnership with the Department of Biotechnology.

Initially, the doses were approved for emergency purposes, which later on was decided to launch for the population. Besides Bihar, 6 other states would also launch ZycoV-D.

ZyCoV-D is the world’s first plasmid DNA vaccine against the coronavirus and the sixth vaccine which got approval in India. Meanwhile, the other five vaccines which were given approval in India are:

The Serum Institute of India (SII) manufactured Covishield, the Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Private Limited manufactured COVAXIN, Russia’s Sputnik V, the United State of America’s (U.S.A.,) Pfizer’s and Johnson and Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccines.
