Omicron, the new variant of the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is spreading rapidly across the world.
In just two days, the virus has now been detected in more than 38 countries from the previous 23 countries. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO,) countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, India, Middle East regions, Germany and many others have cases of this new variant. However, no death cases were reported so far.
Mr. Michael Ryan, the WHO Emergencies Director said, “We’re going to get the answers that everybody out there needs.” However, the WHO confirmed that the spread of Omicron could be a major disaster for the world, affecting economic recovery badly.
A preliminary study by researchers in South Africa, where the variant was first reported on November 24, suggests it is three times more likely to cause reinfections compared to the Delta or Beta strains. The new strain is said to be a community spread, which would affect half of the European countries and other regions in the coming few months.
Found in South Africa on the 24th of November, there are over 400 cases of Omicron variant of the Wuhan virus, across the globe.
The WHO is studying the effects and danger of this new variant and is yet to come up with detailed information about this new mutation.
Meanwhile, countries imposed strict travel rules and mask rules to combat the spread of the Wuhan virus.
