On the 26th of November, Mr. Adar Poonawalla, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Serum Institute of India (SII) announced the resumption of export Covishield.
The export of Covishield, a made in India vaccine against the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19,) would be sent to middle income – low income (Gross National Income below $ 12,000) countries. The export service has been resumed under the global vaccine sharing programme named ‘COVAX.’
In a statement released on Friday, the SII said, ”The first batches of the vaccine left the SII manufacturing facility in Pune.”
It is to be noted, the SII is the only COVID-19 vaccine manufacturer in India, which is exporting Covishield doses across the globe. The SII released a statement regarding the export resumption, which read, “We are delighted to support the global vaccination effort once more. I also want to thank our global partners including AstraZeneca, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gavi, UNICEF and the WHO for their unwavering patience and confidence in our ability to keep on track.”
Meanwhile, so far, the SII has produced close to 1.25 billion vaccine doses, which have been manufactured in India. With this, the SII surpassed the promised production of 1 billion doses by December 2021. In regard to this, Mr. Poonawalla said, “I want to thank our workforce for their superhuman efforts in achieving this major milestone, with 1 billion doses of Covishield now produced by SII. We started to invest at-risk in COVID-19 vaccine production back in March 2020 and Serum Institute colleagues have worked tirelessly ever since to get these life-saving doses to people.”
The first batch of consignment was exported from the Pune factory.
