The Telangana Government’s Annapurna canteens from the 18th of May, started providing free meals to the needy. The decision was taken in the wake of the imposed lockdown in Telangana.

With this, 250 Annapurna canteens across the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limit would provide free food. This would be a benefit for needy people like patients, daily wage workers, underprivileged people, labourers and others.

Arvind Kumar, the Secretary of the Municipal Administration, confirmed the same on Tuesday. He said, as per the directions of K.T. Rama Rao, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister of Telangana, Annapurna meals are being supplied free with immediate effect until further orders in all the 250 centres in GHMC.

These canteens are providing food to more than 45,000 persons in different parts of Hyderabad every day. In addition, food provided in these canteens are hot, hygienic and full of nutrition. Usually the food provided at Annapurna canteens are at Rs. 5.

The decision came after the Telangana Government added 102 new canteens to the existing 140 canteens in the GHMC limits.

The GHMC, in association with Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Trust, operate these canteens.

Meanwhile, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Cabinet is scheduled to meet on the 20th of May and take a decision over lockdown. As of now, the State is under complete lockdown for 10 days, scheduled to end on the 22nd of May.
