A different take on Ali’s recent controversy on joking about Anushka’s “thighs”

Hyderabad: Almost suddenly, comedian Ali struck spotlight – for all the wrong reasons. Ali is one of the few actors in industry who rose to fame with just his hard work, commitment and an ocean of talent. With his quirky humour and comic timing, the actor has found a home in the hearts of billions of fans. He made his mark in T-Town with his remarkable signature dialogues and became one of the most bankable comic icons in the industry.

Ali has acted in thousands of films, hosted several hundreds of TV shows and events and has always succeeded in entertaining audiences with his quick wit and razor-sharp quips. There is almost a sudden uproar surrounding his recent speech at Size Zero’s audio launch were he jokingly called his co-star Anushka a “jalebi”. Certain fractions of the society instantly reacted out loud and marked Ali’s comments as “slanderous, chauvinist and patriarchal”. Once this voice came to light, the masses obviously joined in sheepishly and turned all their energy onto patronizing Ali.

Did we all suddenly forget that mainstream entertainment humor, including Ali’s own work, has always been like this? There’s absolutely nothing new or noteworthy about Ali’s recent statements for it cause such an uproar. Scriptwriters, actors, directors as well as the masses have always taken such jokes at face-value and in the spirit of humor.

Disturbed by the flack the senior actor is going through, Ali has gone out of his way to both clarify and apologize for the hurt he may have caused through his words. But, on the other hand. doesn’t it seem a bit blown out of proportion for everyone to react to a few jokes like this? It almost seems like there is a planned and organised attack against Ali that few individuals must have started knowing full well that the rest of the masses would blindly follow and support. We’ve always seen media to be focused more towards the negative rather than provide an objective view. A few groups/individuals could have easily intended to take on a vendetta against Ali and were waiting for the opportunity to do so. His comments on Anushka were a good-enough start, they must have thought?
