Dangal Wrestles with Records and Wins!

The recently released biopic about the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta and Babita, “Dangal”, has broken the revenue records of Hindi cinema. Starring the perfectionist Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, the movie surpassed all the other films to enter the coveted 350 crore club.

Produced by Aamir Khan, his wife Kiran Rao and Siddarth Roy Kapur, the film has been directed by Nitesh Tiwari. The movie shows the pain and passion of Mahavir and his daughters who strive to make a name for themselves in the unusual field of wrestling all the while wrestling with the mind-set of the then backward India. Geeta Phogat (played by Fatima) was the first women in the history of our Nation’s sport to have won the Women’s Commonwealth Games 2010 for wrestling. Her sister Babita Phogat (played by Sanya Malhotra) also went on to win the successive Commonwealth Games.

So inspiring was the story that it reverberated with audience of all classes and has now broken records for the highest grossing Hindi film of all times banking in more that 350 crore rupees. The record was previously held by “P.K.,” another gem of a movie from Khan, that amassed 340.8 crore rupees. It is in fact interesting to see that the recent movies of Aamir have all made history of some note of the other. A succinct summary was given by the critic Taran Adarsh who tweeted about the tremendous success of the film.

Aamir himself was over the moon with such a response and said, “I am absolutely overwhelmed with all the love that Dangal has got. It is one of the most passionate responses I have ever received. I want to thank everyone for owning the film as their own. It’s the biggest compliment a creative person can receive. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And thank you Nitesh Tiwari.

“Dangal” also broke the record of highest grossing film in a single day by making 42 crores on its fourth day, beating Salman Khan’s “Sultan.” With such enthusiastic appeal from the general crowd even for offbeat cinema, the Indian film scene is definitely taking a turn for the better!
