Sonu Nigam has been the center of controversy after tweeting about ‘azaan’ near his residence. Many have voiced their opinion about this incident and some clerics went as far as issuing a ‘fatwa’ of Rs. 10 kakhs to the person that shaves Nigam’s head. Sonu called the media and shaved his head as per the cleric’s fatwa.

Saif Ali Khan Pataudi, speaking about this issue said that he initially found the tweets aggressive. Speaking to a popular news daily, he said, “Don’t know who you are offending. At one level, I agree, the lesser sound the better. There should be certain decibel levels allowed across religious practices. I also understand the amplification of the sound during azaan comes from insecurity.”

The actor also compared this to Israel and said that three religions co-exist in Israel and he believes it because it is written down. He said, “As a minority, you would like to make your presence felt and hopefully accepted. If someone says that it should be extinguished, it will make some people little uncomfortable. As a precursor to some sort of holocaust, it is the first thing you think of. There’s a bit of fear there.”

Saif Ali Khan also said that it is fine to express views orally and that religion is a private affair and we, as a country and society, should be secular. The singer though, speaking to the media said that his opinion was about loudspeakers and not any particular religion.
