Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi, a veteran music composer, passed away on the 19th of August in Mumbai.
Popularly known as Khayyam Sahab, Mr. Hashmi died at 9:30 P.M., on the 19th of August at Sujay Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai.
Mr. Hashmi, 92 years old, was suffering from prolonged illness and was admitted to the hospital a few days back, after he complained of breathing and age related issues. He was undergoing treatment and was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU,) under the supervision of the doctors at Sujay Hospital.
The news of his demise was confirmed by one of his family friends, who said, “He was admitted to the hospital a few days ago owing to breathing issues and other age-related illnesses. He died at Sujay Hospital at around 9.30pm.”
Pritam Sharma, the Spokesperson of Khayyamji’s Trust, informed the remaining mortals of Khayyam will be kept at his residence from 10:00 A.M., for the people to pay their last respects.
Celebrities such as Rishi Kapoor, Javed Akhtar, Amitabh Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Ayushmann Khurrana, Karan Johar and Madhur Bhandarkar took to their social media handles and expressed grief about the demise of Khayyam Sahab.
Khayyam became popular for his songs in movies like Kabhi Kabhie, Noorie, Umrao Jaan, Razia Sultan and Trishul.
He also won many National awards like the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Padma Bhushan for his music compositions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and conveyed his condolences to the family of Khayyam.
Khayyam is survived by his singer wife, Jagjit Kaur.
The last rites of Mohammed Zahur Khayyam Hashmi will be performed on the 20th of August.
