7.1 magnitude earthquake hits Indian Ocean

New Delhi: A massive earthquake with 7.1 magnitude jolted the Southern Indian ocean. The powerful quake hit the Indian ocean before 11.30 am on Saturday, NZ time. The quake was a shallow tremor with about 10 km deep. However, it is heard that there is a low likelihood of damage and casualties. The earthquake was about 1020 km east-northeast of Australia’s Heard Island and McDonald Islands.

The epicentre was at the Southeast Indian ridge, a tectonic plate boundary located along the seafloor of the southern Indian Ocean, according to Geological Survey of the US.
