In a shocking incident, locals in Chingrighata, Kolkata went on a rampage after a bus ran over two college students. At the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass the mob pelted stones and set three buses on fire. The police rushed to the spot and resorted to teargas after failing to control the mob.
The two boys who lost their lives due to a speeding bus were residents of the areas adjacent to the bypass. The locals poured onto the road and set the buses on fire and pelted stones at the police force. The police were then forced to resort to a lathi charge enraging the crowd further. The fire engines sent to douse the fire were also attacked by the mob.
After three hours, the protests worsened forcing the police to start a push back of the angry mob into the Shantinagar area. The stone pelting continues and the police were forced to use tear gas shells to control the situation. The two first year engineering college students were identified as Biswajit Bhuiyan and Sanjay Banu.
The local MLA Sujit Bose rushed to the spot and said, “It was an unfortunate accident but I urge people to remain calm.” Unfortunately, his plea was rejected and the protest continued till the mob was attacked by the teargas shells.
