The  Animal Welfare Board of India issued a fresh circular to withdraw the Cow Hug Day appeal towards citizens.

Recently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government declared the 14th of February as the National Cow Hug Day and asked all the citizens of India, to break western traditions.  In an official statement, the Government of India (GoI) said, “Hugging cows will bring emotional richness and increase individual and collective happiness.”

An official circular was also issued in this regard by the Animal Welfare Board of India, a body under the ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying,  The decision was taken after a discussion with the Union Government and the Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Ministry of India.

Backing up the urge with facts and benefits, the Government of India said, bovine is the “backbone of Indian culture”.  It also added that swapping Valentine’s Day as Cow Hug Day would reduce the increased threat posed towards the Indian culture which is now extinct in India and leading Indians to forget our culture and traditions.

While many Hindus have taken serious note of the dying Indian culture amongst youths, a section of netizens criticised the Indian Government, calling it a political move.  Backing up the same, many netizens quote the words of historian D.N. Jha, who argued that the cow’s sanctity is a relatively recent tradition by a community whose culture is often imagined as threatened by Muslims.  In his book The Myth of the Holy Cow, Mr. D.N. Jha said, “The cow has tended to become a political instrument in the hands of rulers over time.”

Issued on the 10th of February, Friday, the circular read, “As directed by the Competent Authority and Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying the appeal issued by the Animal Welfare Board of India for the celebration of Cow Hug Day on 14th February, 2023 stands withdrawn.”

The fresh orders are said to be due to social media outrage with memes and jokes, being shared online.  While a section of netizens praised the efforts of the Government of India to regain the lost Hinduism Glory, another section of the Internet slammed the Union Government for this calling it a political move for gains.
