Days after the case of two Hindu girls, Reena and Raveena, being abducted and allegedly being forcefully converted to Islam came to light, another Hindu girl was abducted from the Sindh region in Pakistan, between the 16th and 17th of March.
According to reports, this is the seventh case of a Hindu girl being abducted and forced to convert to Islam in the last one month.
The latest case is about a 16 year old, Mala Kumari Meghwar, who belonged to the Badin district of the Sindh region. According to a complaint filed by Mala’s parents, the girl was kidnapped directly from her home.
The victim’s father approached Sardar Hassan Niazi, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Badin, to register a case against the suspects.
According to Mala’s father, four unidentified men barged into the house at 3 A.M. and dragged the girl to a vehicle waiting outside the house.
However, just like in the case of Reena and Raveena, there are conflicting reports about Mala’s abduction. According to the neighbouring villagers, Mala eloped with a boy and converted to Islam, without being forced into it.
Going by what the girl’s father said, the Sindh Minister for Minorities Affairs, Hari Ram Kishore Lal, asked for a First Information Report (FIR) to be registered. He also instructed the authorities to place the girl’s family under police protection.
According to reports, only 75 lakh Hindus live in Pakistan and a majority of the people live in the Sindh region. Every month, 25 girls are forcefully married in Umerkot district, Sindh. Despite this being a criminal offence according to the law, there is no change in the situation.
Hari Ram Kishore Lal instructed Mushtaq Ahmed, the Director of the Minorities Affairs department, to ensure Mala Kumari Meghwar is found immediately.
