In Hyderabad, repeated traffic violations could soon lead to suspension of driving license. This is a system of penalty points which has been officially implemented.
The unique initiative was launched on Monday which was devised by Hyderabad Traffic Police. The police have released a list of violations under the Motor Vehicles Act.
The officials said the rules will be applicable in three cities namely Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda. If a person is found to drive after the cancellation of his/her license, it will lead to imprisonment.
“Traffic offenders who pose a threat to the fellow motorists’ safety will get penalty points against their driver’s license. Drunk drivers, chain snatchers, accused involved in fatal road mishaps will get maximum penalty points,” Joint Commissioner of Police, V. Ravinder said.
DCP, A.V. Ranganath said, “We will use certain effective software applications to identify or find drivers even in e challans. We will intensify special drives to book spot challans. As a safety measure, we have started conducting impromptu drunk driving tests in particular areas right from 7 P.M.”
As per reports, people can remove 3 penalty points by undergoing a training course or safety program from an institution recognized by the Telangana Transport department.
A proper and centralized database will be efficiently maintained to keep a track of the offenders and to take strict action against them.
An official statement from the Police Commissioner read, “The Penalty Point System is implemented in India for the very first time to inculcate self discipline among commuters with a motive to transforming Hyderabad City into a safe place for commuting and a delightful place for driving.”
