The Academic Council of Delhi University passed a motion to remove a chapter on Pakistan’s national poet Muhammad Iqbal. Famous for his song, Sare Jahan Se Acha, Iqbal is often said to be the one who gave birth to the idea of Pakistan, the historic partition.
As per sources, the Delhi University decided to remove the chapter about Muhammad Iqbal from the political science syllabus. The members of the statutory body confirmed the same in a release, issued on the 26th of May, Friday.
An academic council member said, “A motion was brought regarding a change in the syllabus of political science. As per the motion, there was a chapter on Iqbal that has been removed from the syllabus.”
The DU mentioned that the chapter titled Modern Indian Political Thought is part of the sixth semester paper, for the Bachelor’s degree. However, a final decision regarding the removal of the chapter would be taken by the Executive Council of the university.
Highlighting about Muhammad Iqbal, he was born in 1877 in the Sialkot region of undivided India. Mohammad Iqbal is called the ‘philosophical father of Pakistan. He was the key player in establishing Jinnah as a leader in the Muslim League.
While the decision is still pending with the Executive Council of University, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP,) welcomed the decision by the DU.
