Amid the ongoing Karnataka Syllabus row, several organizations such as political parties, writers, women’s groups, and non-government organizations (NGOs) called for a protest on the 31st of May.

Furthermore, the like-minded organizations like the Student Federation of India (SFI,)  the National Student Union of India (NSUI,) the All India Student Federation (AISF,) the Manava Bandhutva Vedike, Janawadi Women’s Organisation, Dalit organizations, Advocates, some education experts, and senior writers have pledged their support for the protest.  They have demanded termination of the Text Committee Revision Committee headed by Ms. Rohith Chakrathirtha.

The state level protest is scheduled at Freedom Park of Bengaluru, to protest against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government, which dropped many chapters from the school’s and colleges’ syllabus.  Notably, the BJP led Karnataka Education Department dropped chapters of freedom fighters Tipu Sultan, Bhagat Singh and other revolutionaries from the class X syllabus in Kannada subject.

However, the BJP Government denied the allegations and said, the decision to drop the chapters was taken amid the Wuhan virus (COVID-19) pandemic.  The ruling Government said the teachers and students were unable to finish the syllabus, therefore the Education Department decided to drop 30% syllabus.  The BJP also said that the opposition is trying to promote false propaganda in the view of the recent Hijab Row in Karnataka.

Mr. B.C. Nagesh, the Education Minister of Karnataka said, “During the Siddaramaiah-headed Congress government, the syllabus was said to be a burden.  The teachers complained that they couldn’t cover the syllabus in one year.  No lessons on revolutionaries Narayan Guru, and Bhagat Singh have been dropped.  False propaganda is being taken up on social media and otherwise.”  He further added, “A few lines have been deleted about social reformer Periyar. The present syllabus says, Lord Ram belongs to the Vaidik culture and Ravan belongs to the Dravidian culture.  Should the students be taught about this?  If this is omitted, progressive thinkers are disturbed.  They want Ravan, they do not want Ram.”   He had also defended the inclusion of RSS Founder K.B. Hedgewar’s speech in the syllabus and said,  “He joined the revolutionary movement and he was also with the Nagpur Congress Movement, that is why his speech has been included.”

Meanwhile, considering the current situation and crisis due to the Karnataka Syllabus Row, the experts warn of disturbance in the academic environment.
