On Tuesday a stray bag outside the Trump Tower in New York prompted an evacuation. This building is the office for President-elect Donald Trump and his transition team. The bomb squad was called in and they evacuated the building. The bag turned out to be a harmless backpack with Children’s toys.
A video showed people running helter skelter through the Manhattan building’s lobby and Police officers guided them towards the exits. A New York Police Department’s spokesperson, Stephen Davis gave an all clear at 5:00 P.M., after examining the backpack that was left in the Trump Tower in front of the Niketown store. President-elect Trump who resides in the tower and has his offices there was away in Florida when this incident happened. Sean Spicer, Trump’s secretary tweeted that the offices and building were ‘back to work’ after the false alarm. The witnesses described the situation as chaotic and panic struck.
The Trump Tower in Manhattan is not the only office of the President-elect but also has residential flats, restaurants and retail stores apart from the lobby that is open to public from 8:00 A.M., to 10:00 P.M. The NYPD receive almost 42 such reports every day, but the number has increased after Trump’s election as the President. The NYPD said that the bag was left behind by Maria Beckford who was visiting New York from London. But on receiving an urgent call she had to rush home with her son and forgot the bag at the Niketown store in the Trump Tower.
After Donald Trump’s election as President on November 8, the NYPD reportedly attended to 800 such stray bags in the premises of the New York Trump Tower.
