Mallikarjun Kharge, a Congress leader, filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC) against the removal of Alok Verma, the former Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) Director, on Saturday.

Mr. Mallikarjun said, “The act is, completely illegal, arbitrary, punitive, without jurisdiction.”

Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana were deprived of their duties and sent on compulsory leave by the Central Government, on the 24th of October.

Mr. Kharge, in his petition, said he is a part of the three member committee, comprising of the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of India, responsible for the selection of the CBI Director. Mr. Kharge claimed he was not consulted by the members before the removal of the CBI officers and the action was against the law.

In defence of his claims, Mr. Kharge said, “The tenure and term of the CBI directors are protected and even the process of transfer cannot be effected without the previous consent of the Committee.”

Mallikarjun Kharge accused PM Narendra Modi of formulating a conspiracy by removing the CBI officers. Supporting the allegations of his party, Mr. Kharge said Narendra Modi sacked Alok Verma because Verma was about to launch an investigation into the Rafale fighter jet deal.

Mallikarjun Kharge is not the first one to file a petition after Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana were sent on compulsory leave. Before Mallikarjun Kharge’s petition, CBI officer A.K. Bassi and Alok Verma filed petitions in the SC as well.
