In December 2021, the messaging platform, WhatsApp banned over 2 million accounts in India.

On the 1st of February, Tuesday, Meta-owned WhatsApp said that it has banned 2,079,000 accounts in India in December in compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021.

In the latest data, released by the WhatsApp Spokesperson, the company banned these accounts in compliance with the new Information Technology (IT) Rules, issued by the Government of India.  The company said that it also received 528 grievance reports in the same month from the country and took action on 24 of those.  The spokesperson further said, “WhatsApp is an industry leader in preventing abuse, among end-to-end encrypted messaging services.”

“Following the IT Rules 2021, we have published our seventh monthly report for December,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a statement

The company report further read, WhatsApp company will work further with transparency, providing information regarding their work.  In a statement, Notably, India is the leading country with the maximum number of WhatsApp users.  It has a total of over 450 million users alone.
