Eighteen Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members, on the 20th of March, resigned from the Party, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in Arunachal Pradesh.

The BJP lawmakers were upset with the Party, as the BJP denied giving the candidates a BJP ticket for contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

The 18 BJP members include Kumar Wai, the Home Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Jarkar Gamlin, the Tourism Minister, Jarpum Gambin, the General Secretary of the BJP in Arunachal Pradesh, and six lawmakers.

Kumar Wai said, “They (BJP) attack the Congress on dynasty politics but look at Arunachal Pradesh. The Chief Minister’s family has got three tickets.”

The lawmakers and ministers are upset and said, if the BJP had informed the members before that the Party will not give them tickets, they would not have resigned.

However, the Party gave the members false hope and denied the ticket at the last moment, following which, all the members resigned.

The resignation of approximately 18 lawmakers and ministers could be a major setback for the BJP.

The members left the Party and joined the opposition, the National People’s Party (NPP,) led by Conrad Sangma.

The BJP will contest the Lok Sabha elections alone in the State, as the major parties in the State denied to form an alliance with the BJP.

Arunachal Pradesh will contest a total of 2 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to be held on the 11th of April.

The major parties contesting are the BJP, the Indian National Congress (INC) and the NPP.

The results of the Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.

Stay tuned for further updates about the Lok Sabha elections.
