Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi is on a two day visit to the Northeastern States. He reached Guwahati on the 8th of February. The day’s schedule included launching several projects, addressing rallies and touring around Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Tripura.

Jagdish Mukhi, the Governor of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, the Chief Minister of Assam, and Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Finance Minister of Assam, and senior Government officials welcomed PM Modi at the Guwahati Airport.

However, people across the Northeastern States protested against and boycotted Mr. Modi with regard to Citizenship Bill, 2019. The residents of the States greeted Modi with black flags and slogans, asking him to go back.

Dipanka Nath, the President of the All Assam Student Union (AASU,) said, “The pain of the indigenous people will be seen across Assam tomorrow…Effigies of the prime minister will be burnt in every corner of the state.”

However, Mr. Modi reached Arunachal Pradesh and laid the foundation for several development projects, including the Greenfield Airport in the Hollongi Parum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Later, PM Modi came back to Guwahati, where he will inaugurate a six lane bridge built over the Brahmaputra river. He also laid the foundation for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Chansgari.

Mr. Modi’s last destination was Tripura, where he inaugurated a statue of Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, the last ruler of Tripura. Modi also unveiled a plaque for a 23 km long railway track between Garjee of Gomati district and Belonia in South Tripura. He inaugurated a new block of the Indian Institute of Information and Technology (IIIT) on the campus of the Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) as well.

Mr. Modi also addressed a public rally at Swami Vivekananda Maidan, Tripura. Modi’s visit to the Northeastern States is a part of his five day trip to ten States.
