Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday launched the ‘Thai Maman Thanga Mothiram’ scheme at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.
Under the scheme, eligible babies born in government hospitals will receive a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring. The initiative aims to encourage more families to choose government healthcare facilities for childbirth.
The scheme covers eligible babies born on or after June 22, 2026. The mother must be a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu to receive the benefit.
The state government has already procured 1.28 lakh gold rings for the first phase. Each ring will have a unique serial number and will be provided in tamper-proof packaging.
The government has allocated ₹755.83 crore for the scheme. It plans to provide around 4.41 lakh rings every year.
During Monday’s launch, Vijay handed over gold rings to newborn beneficiaries at the Madurai hospital. The scheme is also aimed at supporting maternal and child health and increasing public confidence in government hospitals.
