Telangana conducted its first phase of Panchayat polls, on the 21st of January, from 7:00 A.M., to 1:00 P.M.

The polls are divided into 3 phases. The other two phases of the Panchayat polls are scheduled on the 25th of January and the 30th of January.

In the first phase of the polls, a total of 4,479 panchayats were scheduled to conduct the elections. Among the 4,479 panchayats, 769 declared unanimous elections, whereas 9 were cancelled due to unknown reasons.

According to a senior official of the State Election Commission, the three phases of the Panchayat polls will witness a total of 12,202 candidates for Sarpanch posts in 3,701 panchayats. As many as 70,094 candidates will contest the elections for 28,976 wards.

After the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh into the State of Telangana and the State of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, these are the first Panchayat polls in Telangana.

IPS officer Jitender, the Telangana Additional Director General (Law and Order,) said, approximately 55,000 police personnel were deployed to conduct the Panchayat polls smoothly.

The counting of votes started on the 21st of January, around 2:00 P.M.
