10 SC and ST professors of UoH resigned after the death of Dalit, Rohith

Hyderabad: In the bid of solidarity with the protesting students over the suicide of a Dalit student, 10 Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe professors of Hyderabad Central University on Thursday resigned from administrative posts.
The situation in the university remains tensed as protests continue over the suicide of PhD scholar V Rohith.

Currently the university is now planning of cutting down the punishment for the four other Dalit students who were suspended along with Rohith for allegedly assaulting an ABVP member. Sources said that the University is also considering closing the institution for a brief while.

Meanwhile, political parties are trying to score brownie points on the issue by portraying themselves fighting for the backward class. After Congress, TMC, AIMIM, BSP, Left, Aam Admi Party has stepped up its attacks demanding an explanation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will visit the university today. His party has also demanded resignations of Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya.

Rohith, 26, hanged himself on Sunday, days after he and four other Dalit students were suspended by the university for allegedly beating up an activist of the BJP’s student wing. Their access to the hostel and cafeteria was barred, though they were allowed in classes and the library.
