Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital in Medhipatnam, Hyderabad reported at least 50 cases of eye injuries due to firecrackers on Thursday and Friday.

Out of the 50 cases, 40 were minors between the age group of 6 and 12. Among them, six children needed to be operated and are currently under observation.

An 18 year old engineering female student was gravely injured after a rocket went into her hostel room injuring her eyes.

Superintendent at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Dr. Ravinder Goud said, “We are yet to determine if the sight of this student will be restored. We have operated on the six children and we are waiting to determine what needs to be done further. Children tend to recover faster than adults. This is commonly the age group that often comes to the hospital with firecracker injuries after Diwali. We have been advising people to burst crackers under supervision for a long time now.”

The children with perforated injuries had to be operated while others needed chemicals washed out of their eyes. The doctors at the hospital informed the parents were naturally shocked and scared for the fate of their children’s eyes.
