BMC Budget: Mumbai Civic Body Announces Budget For 2018

On Friday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced its budget for the year 2018-19. The Civic Body stated its budget was set at Rs. 27,258 crores. Last year the budget was set at Rs. 25,151 crores. The BMC has increased their budget by a whopping 8.4%. The BMC is India’s richest municipal organization.

The Civic Body has given the green signal for two big ticket projects Mumbai Coastal Road and Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR.) BMC announced Rs. 100 crores to Rs. 1,500 crores for the Coastal Road and Rs. 100 crores for the GMLR project.  

Capital expenditure of Rs 9,527.8 crore has been allotted by the BMC for development projects for city infrastructure. The capital expenditure allocated last year was Rs. 8,121.58 crores.

The BMC will also receive aid as GST reimbursement from the Centre and the State amounting to Rs. 8,401 crores. The Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta announced that the body will also allot Rs. 2,569.35 crores for education. This is an increase of Rs. 257 crores from last year’s budget.  

Due to the multiple fire accidents in the city, the BMC announced Rs. 151 crores to the fire brigade. An additional Rs. 28 crores for machinery for the fire department.

Civic run hospitals in the suburbs of Mumbai will receive a sum of Rs. 61 crores for equipment and medicines. Mehta said the aim of this was to reduce the burden on major hospitals. The civic body will also use Rs. 28 crores to install LED lights across the city.
