The Enforcement Directorate arrested Gagan Dhawan, a businessman for connections with money laundering. Dhawan was arrested after officials found proof of his involvement in a Rs. 5,000 crores scam.
It was also revealed Gagan is a close aide of senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel. Patel works as the political secretary to the Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
The arrest was made in connection with an ongoing probe against shell companies used to launder money. The money laundering is an alleged bank fraud case involving a Gujarat pharma firm and few other companies.
The officials arrested Dhawan under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA.) Dhawan will be presented in court today for a judicial custody extension. Dhawan has been accused of helping Sterling Biotech company commit bank loan fraud and other illegal transactions.
The ED will also question Dhawan on the allegations of bribing senior income tax department officials. Back in August, the ED raided Dhawan’s premises to investigate the piling allegations.
