KTR Talks About Deadly Threats To Water Bodies In Hyderabad

Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K. T. Rama Rao talked about the deadly threats to water bodies in Hyderabad. The Minister admitted apart from encroachments, industrial effluents and sewage were deadly for the city’s water bodies.

Speaking during the Question Hour in the Assembly, KTR spoke about the various Government measures taken up to protect the city’s lakes. He was quoted saying, “A master plan is being prepared for setting up 60 sewage treatment plants and decentralized sewage treatment in the city.”

The Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) directed industries to close outlets that join any water body in the city. The board suggested the industries construct separate drains for the effluents. Apart from this the industries must install Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems or become a member of the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP.) The CEPT treats effluents generated to dispose of properly.

KTR also announced 100 industrial units would be shifted to the outside of the Outer Ring Road. The Government will also provide the industries with ZLD or CETP systems. The Minister also said a meeting with MLAs will be held to discuss individual responsibilities to protect the lakes.

During the State Budget, Rs. 287.93 crores were allocated for the development of 20 lakes and tanks in the city. The Hussain Sagar will also be cleaned by global tenders

Hyderabad produces 1,400 mld (million liters per day) of sewage but the present treatment plants are capable of treating only 700 mld.
