On Thursday, six people including two women died after getting struck by lightning in Mysuru.

Mysuru Superintendent of Police, Ravi Channanavar reported the incident, “The incident occurred around 2 P.M., when a 10 member group rushed to take shelter under a tree near the temple in Hunaswadi village due to heavy rain and thunderstorm.”

He further added, “Of the victims, two women and two elderly men died instantaneously at the spot while the other two (youth) died at a government hospital in Periyapatna after they were admitted with burns.”

A MET official stated, that lightening generally strikes humans and animals when they are under some kind of shelter like a tree due to electrical conductivity and earthing.

Channanavar said, “The victims, who belong to the shepherd community, were in a farm field tending to their cattle grazing during the afternoon when the downpour began and lightning struck.”

Due to the formation of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal the area experienced heavy rainfall throughout the day.

This is the second time a case of lightning claimed lives in the past two weeks in Karnataka.
