On Monday, the Hyderabad police registered a case against an NRI for divorcing his wife through a newspaper advertisement.

The Hussainialam police filed the case against Mohammad Manaziruddin. The NRI is a London resident and had married a 24 year old woman from Hyderabad in September 2015.

The victim was quoted saying, “Manaziruddin promised to take me to London, but he never did. After the marriage, he came to India twice and was in touch with me until this July. I found out that he had placed an advertisement for divorce in May without telling me about it.”

This is unfortunately not the first such case to surface in Hyderabad.

In April this year, Mohammed Mushtaquddin, a banker from Saudi Arabia ended his marriage with his 25 year old wife in Hyderabad after posting a triple talaq advertisement.

The distraught woman explained, the two had recently returned from the middle east with their 10 month old baby.

She said, “If I did anything wrong, he should have spoken to me and my parents. If I was wrong he should have given talaq in front of everyone as he has married me in front of all relatives. Why did he run away to Saudi Arabia without meeting me… and divorce me through an ad even with a 10-month-old baby.”

A landmark judgment this year by the Supreme Court made triple talaq illegal. The practice was defined as unconstitutional, manifestly arbitrary and void in law.
