The by election for the RK Nagar Constituency finally began today at 8 A.M. The polling started at all the 258 Polling Stations. The election is happening a year after the seat became vacant after the demise of Jayalalithaa.
It was initially scheduled for April this year but was canceled after multiple complaints about cash distribution among voters. The seat will be filled soon with 59 candidates fighting for Jayalalithaa’s legacy.
Among the 59, three of the candidates are likely to battle it out. AIADMK’s E. Madhusudhanan, former AIADMK member T.T.V Dhinakaran contesting as an independent candidate and the opposition DMK’s N. Marudhu Ganesh.
The RK Nagar bypoll is the most expensive election in the Country. They have deployed 20 monitoring teams with voice recorders, 21 static surveillance teams, 75 flying squad teams and 2,500 security personnel. Apart from the security forces more than 200 surveillance cameras have been set up across the 45 check posts. The Election Commission typically pays nothing more than Rs. 60 lakh for a bypoll but the EC shelled out Rs. 3 crores for this election.
The results of the Rk Nagar bypoll will be on the 24th of December.
