Debarred Dalit scholar commits suicide at University of Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Havoc have been created at the University of Hyderabad after a student allegedly committed suicide. Rohit Vermula, 25-year-old, allegedly hanged himself on Sunday at the hostel in the Hyderabad Central University.

A group of students at the University sat next to the dead-body all night, refusing to allow the funeral unless the university authorities heard them out. The city police team came this morning and took away the body and arrested eight students. Rohit was reportedly thrown out of his hostel two weeks ago and had been camping outside the university gate with four other research scholars.

Dalit student was also been suspended from all student activities after he and other dalit scholars who are members of the Ambedkar union, were accused of attacking an activist of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad or ABVP, a union linked to the BJP.

Venkat, friend of Rohit, who was active in the Ambedkar union of Dalit students, was “heartbroken” that his requests for an appointment with the Vice Chancellor had been ignored even though he had been living in the open for days.

”Even Dalit professors who came to meet us, supported the Vice Chancellor rather than us,” Rohit reportedly told Venkat earlier in the day.
