CJI Dipak Misra Recommends Justice Rajan Gagoi as Succesor

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra recommended Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the successor on Tuesday. He wrote a recommendation letter to the Central Government for the appointment of Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next and 46th Chief Justice Of India.

CJI Misra’s recommendation keeps up the tradition of the most senior Supreme Court (SC) Judge being made CJI after the retirement of the incumbent one. Following the principles, the outgoing CJI Dipak Misra sent the recommendation for his successor 30 days before he is to demit office so that the Chief Justice-designate is named well in time. CJI Misra is retiring on the 2nd of October but as the day is a national holiday on account of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, the 1st of October will be his last working day.

According to the sources, if the recommendation is cleared by the Central Government Justice Gogoi will have a tenure of 13 months till the 17th of November 2019. He will be administered the oath for office by President Ram Nath Kovind on the 3rd of October.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi is one of the four Judges of the Supreme Court. He was also elevated to the Supreme Court in the month of April 2012 after a tenure as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court. Justice Gogoi is native from Assam who will be the first CJI from the North East region of the country. He is the son of Keshab Chandra Gogoi, a former Assam chief minister under the Indian National Congress regime 1982.
