In the northeastern state of Manipur, the situation seems out of control amid the ongoing protests against the non tribals Meiteis.

The violence hit Manipur is burning down with constant attacks, agitations and protests, demanding justice for tribals, who are against the demands of Meiteis, asking for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.  In order to control the situation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Government imposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC,) which restricted gathering of four or more people, and any kind of event.

In addition, approximately 40,000 police personnel of several security forces, including the central forces were deployed in Imphal and other regions of Manipur.  Furthermore, the police and the Manipur Government also suspended internet services and message services for the next five days.

The State Government also formed rescue forces to evacuate people from the violence hit region and shift them to rescue houses and shelter homes.  So far, as many as 9,000 people were shifted to a safer place in Manipur, whereas the rescue operation is still underway.

Meanwhile, the worst violent situation in Manipur has given an opportunity for the opposition leaders including the Indian National Congress (INC) to speak against the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On the 4th of May, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the Indian National Congress, urged PM Narendra Modi to restore peace in Manipur.  In a tweet, Mr. Rahul Gandhi said, “Deeply concerned about Manipur’s rapidly deteriorating law and order situation.  The Prime Minister must focus on restoring peace and normalcy.  I urge the people of Manipur to stay calm.”

In addition, Mr. Mallikarjun Khagre, the President of the INC, hit out at the BJP and said, “Manipur is burning.  BJP has created fissures among communities and destroyed the peace of a beautiful state.”  He further added, “BJP’s politics of hate, division, and its greed for power is responsible for this mess.  We appeal to people from all sides to exercise restraint and give peace a chance.”

Furthermore, veteran boxer from Manipur Mary Kom made an emotional appeal to the Central Government seeking help.  In a post, Mary Kom said, “My state Manipur is burning, kindly help.”

Concerned about the situation, Mr. Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, called the Manipur CM Mr. Biren Singh and took a stock of the situation, assuring help from the Central Government.
