Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, proposed to have ‘One Nation, One Uniform’ for police officials.

On the 28th of October, Friday, Mr. Narendra Modi shared the idea and said that it was “just an idea” and not an imposition and asked the states to think about it as just a suggestion.

In a tweet, Mr. Narendra Modi said, “The ‘One Nation, One Uniform’ for police is just an idea.  I am not trying to impose it on you.  Just give it a thought.  It may happen, it may happen in five, 50, or 100 years. But let’s give it a thought.”

The idea was said to form a collective unity and identical police force across India.  The statement was made during the Chintan Shivir (brainstorming session) of state home ministers held on the 28th of October, Friday.

Besides the same uniform for police, Mr. Narendra Modi also supported the suggestion of Mr. Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, who called for a uniform law and order policy.  Mr. Narendra Modi said, “Cooperative federalism was not only the feeling of the Constitution but also the responsibility of the states and the Centre.” He claimed that even if law and order is subjected state wise, a uniform law would unite the country and integrity with internal security.

Mr. Narendra Modi said, “Working together by states for internal security is a constitutional mandate as well as responsibility towards the nation.”  He also said if the central and state cooperate, the nation would be a better and a secure place for its citizens.  He also urged the state governments to review old laws and amend them to the current context as he batted for coordinated action by all the agencies to meet the emerging challenges of law and order and security.
