On the 7th of January, Friday, India reported its second death due to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19’s) new variant, Omicron.

According to sources, a 50 year old woman, who was admitted at a state run hospital, suffered a brain stroke. Later, on the 27th of December, she died.

After her death, the samples of the woman were sent for RT-PCR test, following which she was said to be COVID-19 positive.  In addition, her samples were sent for Genome Sequencing, which resulted in Omicron positive on the 7th of January.

The aforementioned data was confirmed by Dr. Snehalata Sahu, the CDMO of Balangir, Odisha.  She said she was admitted at Burla Medical College and reported COVID-19 positive.   

As of now, the district administration and the health department of Odisha rushed to her native village, Agalpur for contact tracing.  In addition, further testing of the contacts is underway.

Meanwhile, with the Odisha woman’s death, India reported a second death due to Omicron.  The first death was reported in Rajasthan.
