5 Activists Arrested: SC To Hear Activists Plea On Massive Raids

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear the pleas from the arrested activists by the Pune police. The SC will question the arrest of the five activists who are allegedly linked to a Maoist plot. The plea of activists will be heard by the SC at 3:45 P.M., today.

The previous day’s controversial multi city raid by the Pune police is an ongoing heated discussion. The arrested activists, Sudha Bharadwaj, Gautam Navlakha, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves and P. Varavara Rao moved the SC questioning their arrest.

After the challenged arrests of the activists, the Pune police sources claimed their arrests were based on evidence that the accused were planning a “big conspiracy.” It is alleged that the activists were plotting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assassination.

The Pune police sources also mentioned monitoring the activists for a week before the arrest. The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis was briefed about the evidence before yesterday’s raids.

The police also highlighted that the activists were in touch with 35 major universities and students across the country. The police further alleged this was done to recruit students to go ahead with the planned movement.

The Joint Commissioner of the Police Shivaji Bhodke, said the activists have been “arrested on terror charges.” Yesterday’s arrests were made after an investigation from previous arrests made in June. The arrests and raids were conducted for alleged Maoist activities.

The petitioner requested the SC to scrutinize the false allegation laid on the human rights activists. They sought a stay on the arrests and also requested an explanation for these massive raids against the activists.

The petitioners are Romila Thapar, Devki Jain, Prabhat Patnaik, Satish Deshpandey and Maya Daruwala.
