Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi, the President of the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) made remarks against the Uttar Pradesh (U.P.,) Government in the Lakhimpur incident. On the 4th of October, Mr. Owaisi said violence that erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur was sponsored by the state.

Addressing the media, Mr. Owaisi said, “It is state-sponsored violence. Both the Uttar Pradesh Government and Centre had to be blamed for this (Lakhimpur) incident because the Home Ministry’s MoS made a provocative speech a few days ago that within two minutes will finish all things (farmer protest) which led to this incident.” He further added, “We demand that for a free-fair investigation in this matter. The High Court or Supreme Court sitting judge should monitor the inquiry of this incident.”

He further said, “I’ll be visiting Lakhimpur Kheri soon to show solidarity with the people who have been murdered by the Union Minister’s son. It’s a heinous crime. It’s high time that the PM Modi led Government should withdraw the three farm laws and he should remove this Minister.”

Situation at Lakhimpur, Khera district

Highlighting the situation at Lakhimpur area, the Uttar Pradesh Police have restricted the movements of political leaders and imposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC.) The police arrested the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of opposition, detained a delegation of Punjab ministers led by Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Mr. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa at Saharanpur.

What was the incident?

On the 3rd of October, eight people including four farmers were killed after a SUV ran over them. The car was driven by Ashish Mishra Teni, the son of Mr. Ajay Mishra Teni, the Union Home Minister for Uttar Pradesh. The incident not only sparked tension amongst protesting farmers but also gave political mileage to the opposition, demanding strict action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.) Besides the 8 people dead, 12-15 people suffered serious injuries and are being treated at a State run hospital in the Lakhimpur area.

After incident protest:

On Sunday night, the 3rd of October, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha confirmed the deceased four farmers to be Lovepreet Singh (20,) Daljeet Singh (35,) Nachattar Singh (60) and Gurvinder Singh (19.) The incident took place when farmers gathered in Tikunia to register their protest by showing black flags to Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Keshav Prasad Maurya and the Union Minister Mr. Ajay Mishra Teni, who were visiting the village for a few scheduled Government programmes. The SKM staged a protest and demanded justice for farmers who lost their lives due to the political leader’s son.

Soon the opposition leaders joined the protest, demanding strict punishment for the culprit. Ms. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the General Secretary of Indian National Congress (INC) in U.P., protested and was later arrested.

The matter worsened with tension at Lakhimpur, Kheri. The protestors allegedly started burning cars and became violent. To control the situation, the Uttar Pradesh Government deployed heavy police personnel in the village and across the district.

Mr. Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, took to Twitter and expressed condolences to the families, who lost their loved ones in the protest. In addition, after rounds of negotiations, the U.P., Government is now to give Rs. 45 lakhs and a job each to the families of the four deceased farmers, while the injured will receive an aid of Rs. 10 lakh each. The jobs will be given in tandem with the qualifications of the family members. The farmers have now allowed the administration to go ahead with the final rites of the deceased.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP, ) the Samajwadi Party) and other leaders also asked the Police to arrest the son of the Union Minister.

The matter would be investigated by a retired High Court Judge.
