On Tuesday, Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah announced Prem Kumar Dhumal as the BJP chief minister candidate in the upcoming Himachal Pradesh elections.
The 73 year old politician has served as the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh twice, between 1998 to 2003 and 2008 to 2012.
Amit Shah conducted a public meeting in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh to make the announcement. He was quoted as saying, “The BJP is going to fight the Himachal Pradesh assembly polls under the leadership of Prem Kumar Dhumal. Dhumal is currently a former CM but after December 18, he will be the new chief minister of the State.”
At present, Dhumal holds the designation of Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly. Earlier, Union Minister J.P. Nadda was to be the CM candidate but Dhumal’s connections in Himachal Pradesh tipped the scale in his favor.
