The Indian National Congress (INC) delegation visited Jahangirpuri in Delhi to meet the families affected by the demolition carried out on the 20th of April, Thursday.
It is to be noted, on Thursday, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) carried out an encroachment drive to demolish illegal construction in the clash hit the Jahangirpuri region of North Delhi. However, within a couple of hours of demolition, the Supreme Court issued status quo and asked the NDMC to stop the demolition process.
In regard to this, Mr. Ajay Maken, the General Secretary of the INC led delegation visited Jahangirpuri and said, “We have come to Jahangirpuri to meet the victims. Police have been cooperative. We have come here to tell the people that this should not be seen from the prism of religion.”
Besides the INC, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Politburo member Mr. Brinda Karat also took a dig at the NDMC and called the demolition drive a targeted act. The CPM member said the act is a planned strategy of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled civic body and called it unconstitutional. In addition, Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi, the President of the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) also visited Jahangirpuri and called the drive a “targetted drive.”
The demolition drive in Jahangirpuri became a matter of concern, as it was in news for the recent communal clashes during the occasion of Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti. Many people including police officials were injured in violent communal clashes in the region.
