After the recent acid attack incident in Delhi, the Delhi Commission for Women issued a notice to the online marketplace Flipkart.

The notice was issued in view of the recent acid attack case, in which two masked men allegedly threw acid on a 17 year old girl in Delhi.  The incident took place on the 14th of December, near the Uttam Nagar area, when the girl was returning home after school which was in West Delhi.  The girl received severe burn injuries, including 7-8% burns on her face and is being treated at the Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi.  The alleged suspects who have been arrested in the case are Sachin Arora (20,) Harshit Aggarwal (19) and Virender Singh (22.)  According to the police, the accused were planning the attack for a week.  The accused were arrested with the help of CCTV cameras, installed in the area.

The incident created a backlash amongst netizens and citizens, with the demand of strict action against the culprits.

In addition, after an initial investigation, it was revealed that the culprit ordered acid online on the 9th of December, from e commerce platform, Flipkart, which was delivered on the 11th of December.   In this regard, the Police and the Delhi Women’s Commission issued a notice to the online shopping platform, asking them to respond to why such items, which were banned in 2013 by the Supreme Court are easily available for customers.

Responding to the issued notice, the representatives of Flipkart said, “We strongly condemn this unfortunate incident, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family.  The Flipkart marketplace platform closely monitors and delists products that violate expected standards.”  The company further said, “Strict action is taken against sellers who are found to be engaged in selling products that are illegal, unsafe, and prohibited.  The concerned seller has been blacklisted, and we are extending all support to the concerned authorities in their investigation.”

Besides Flipkart, Amazon was also issued a notice asking why such dangerous products are available on their sites.  The Women’s Commission of Delhi asked both companies to explain why such products are still available and asked to name the seller who sold such products on the e-platform.

The notice issued by the Delhi Women Commission read, “The easy availability of acid on online platforms is a matter of grave concern and needs to be checked urgently.”
