The Election Commission of India (ECI,) on the 6th of January, announced the schedule of Delhi Assembly elections 2020.

According to the released schedule, the elections would be held on the 8th of February and the results would be announced on the 11th of February.

Sunil Arora, the Chief Election Commissioner, announced the schedule during a press conference.  However, keeping in mind the current situation, Sunil Arora said, “If there arises a situation where it is not conducive to conduct polls, the Constitution gives Election Commission the power to defer the polls.”

The current situation in Delhi is not very peaceful and may affect the elections, if it remains the same.

The polls would be held across 13,750 polling stations for 70 Assembly seats.  The term of the current Assembly is scheduled to end on the 22nd of February, 2020.

A total of 14,692,316 voters are eligible to vote in the Assembly elections.  The major parties contesting the elections are the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP,) the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)

The BJP, which is confident about winning the elections, said, “People in Delhi have been trying to get rid of the Kejriwal government. Now, BJP will bring development in Delhi. Ayushman Bharat, farmer programs, Awas Yojna, etc., were not implemented by AAP. It has failed and now it’s time is over. We are confident of BJP’s victory in Delhi.”

The current Government in Delhi is led by AAP.

With the announcement of the Delhi Assembly elections’ schedule, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into effect from the 6th of January.

Stay tuned for further updates.
