The Election Commission of India (ECI,) on the 27th of September, issued a new notification regarding the Karnataka bypolls.

According to the new notification, Karnataka will conduct its bypolls in 15 Assembly constituencies on the 5th of December.

After the resignation and disqualification of 15 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD[S,]) 15 MLA posts fell vacant.

The Election Commission decided to postpone the date of the by elections in the wake of the ongoing Supreme Court (SC) proceedings involving the MLAs.

The disqualified MLAs of the State challenged their disqualification in the Supreme Court.  The next hearing regarding the disqualification of the MLAs is scheduled on the 22nd of October.

The initial date for the by elections was the 24th of October.

However, according to the new schedule, the nomination process for the Assembly elections will now begin from the 11th of November and continue till the 18th of November.  The EC would scrutinise the applications on the 19th of November, whereas the last date to withdraw nominations would be the 21st of November.

The EC also submitted a letter to the SC and urged them to decide about the MLAs in the next hearing.

Justice N.V. Ramana is leading the bench reviewing the case of the MLAs.

The Karnataka bypolls will be held on the 5th of December and the results will be announced on the 9th of December.

Stay tuned for further updates.
