The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) law proposed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has become a nationwide political topic for controversy and discussion.

The UCC, a agenda of the BJP is said to be triggered a detailed debate amongst political party, while the Congress, AIMIM and JD(U) are opposing the UCC, the AAP, BJP and other right wing state governments are in favor of this law, which would demolish all the existing laws for communities, especially in the aspects of marriage, divorce, child and custody.

What is this UCC?

The UCC is the idea of having a common code of personal laws for people of all religions. Introduced recently to the public, the UCC is one of the pending agendas of the BJP Government, promised in the manifesto of the 2019 elections.

With the implementation of the UCC Implementation would rule out several other laws applicable to various communities in India.  If implemented, it would be like one law for all, demolishing other community based laws like, the Hindu Marriage Act, Hindu Succession Act, the Indian Christian Marriages Act, the Indian Divorce Act and the Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act.

Why is BJP endorsing UCC?

Notably, the UCC has been one of the main manifesto promises of the BJP, ahead of the 2019 elections.  While others like Ram Ayodhya Temple, Abolition of Article 370 are successfully implemented, the BJP is all set to make UCC a reality.  The UCC implementation would make one law for all, removing all the other community aspects of law related to issues like marriage, divorce, child custody and other such domestic issues.  The UCC could also be a major boost for the BJP, to strengthen the party in the 2024 General elections.

Why Opposition Is Against UCC?

Opposition claims introducing UCC is a tactic of the BJP to divert attention from real problems like unemployment, inflation and Manipur violence.  They claim the UCC would divide Indians.  The All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) accused the BJP of depriving India of its diversity, with the implementation of UCC.  In addition, the tribals groups with their own custom and laws would be affected, and are opposing the UCC.

States Which Started Creating Awareness On UCC?

After the recent public address of PM Narendra Modi, the BJP led state government started creating awareness regarding the UCC, and accused Congress of misleading people, especially Muslims.

If implemented, the Uniform Civil Code would give new dimensions to the Indian law for all the communities in basic aspects of marriage, child, divorce and other issues.
