India to have common number ‘112’ for all emergency services

New Delhi: Like United State’s 911, India to have a common number for all emergency services.  Telecom Commission, an inter-ministerial committee by the central government, has accepted Telecom Regulator of India’s recommendations to use ‘112’ for all emergency services like the fire department, police ambulance services.

According to the sources “Telecom Commission has accepted Trai’s recommendation on single emergency number 112. It will now be drafted by the Department of Telecom and will require Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad’s approval. It will be rolled out within months rather than a year.”
This service will be accessible on landlines, cell phones whose outgoing call facilty has been stopped ot temporarily suspended.
