AIADMK leader Jayaram Jayalalitha greets the audience during her swearing-in-ceremony as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu state in Chennai, India, Saturday, May 23, 2015. An appeals court acquitted the powerful politician in southern India of corruption charges earlier this month, clearing the way for her to return to public office. She was forced last year to step down as the highest elected official in Tamil Nadu after a Bangalore court in September convicted her of possessing wealth disproportionate to her income and sentenced her to four years in prison. The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that the former CM of Tamil Naduthe late J. Jayalalithaa will not be convicted in the corruption case. The SC rejected Karnataka High Court’s plea, requesting to convict her. The HC had approached the SC for reviewing its verdict that did not give any judgment on the late CM’s disproportionate assets case. The HC said that it would be impossible to recover the Rs. 100 crores amount if she was not held guilty.

The SC in February rejected the Karnataka High Court’s order that acquitted the four accused including the late CM. The court acquitted Sasikala but convicted Ms. Jayalalithaa in the 19 year old case. The HC challenged the SC’s decision that was pronounced on February 14 that acquitted Jayalalithaa and convicted her aide Sasikala and said it was an “error apparent on the face of the record.”

After Jayalalithaa died, the court ended all proceedings against her but acquitted Sasikala along with two other leaders. The HC also said that the fine levied on her can be recovered. The SC upheld its decision and said that the late CM cannot be convicted in the disproportionate assets case.
