Justice Chelameswar Talks About Unprecedented Press Conference

Justice Chelameswar served as a judge for 21 years and retired on Friday. He also spoke about the unprecedented Press Conference held by all the top Supreme Court judges in January. Mr. Chelameswar stated the conference was their way of strengthening the judicial system.

He was quoted saying, “We made our attempts to set the things right according to our perception of what is wrong and what is right in that context. Since we concluded that we were not able to set the things right, we decided to inform the nation.”

Justice Chelameswar said he and the other senior most judges in the Court were concerned of the external forces influencing the Judiciary. The four judges notices sensitive cases were allocated to a selected bench.

There are speculations that Justice Ranjan Gogoi who is next in line to be Chief Justice might lose the opportunity for his involvement in the rebellion. However, Chelameswar rubbished these rumours and said it would not come to that.

The four Justices Jasti Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan Lokur and Kurian Joseph stated there was an urgency to protect democracy as the highest Institute in the Country was compromised.

The four Justices explain that they failed to convince CJI Misra of the urgent need to preserve the judiciary system. The press conference was held at Justice Chelameswar’s residence at 4, Tughlaq Road in New Delhi.

At the press conference, Chelameswar was quoted saying, “It’s an extraordinary event in the history of any nation and in the history of this institution. It’s not a political meeting. Sometimes the administration of the Supreme Court (SC) is not in order and many things which are less than desirable have happened in the last few months.”

This was the first time in India’s history that the Supreme Court Judges asked the nation to decide CJI Misra’s impeachment. There has been a long standing rift between the top most judges and the head of SC Misra.
