The issue between the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and the four senior most judges continue. But the CJI reached out to the four judges who rebelled against him on Tuesday. The four judges went into the CJI’s official chamber at the Apex Court and had a 15 minute discussion. According to sources, the discussion will continue tomorrow.
This is the first time the CJI met the four topmost judges after the unprecedented press conference held on the 13th of January.
At the press conference, the four Justices explained they failed to convince CJI Misra of the urgent need to preserve the judiciary system. The press conference was held at Justice Chelameswar’s residence at 4, Tughlaq Road in New Delhi.
This was the first time in India’s history that the Supreme Court Judges asked the nation to decide CJI Misra impeachment. There has been a long standing rift between the top most judges and the head of SC Misra. The issue is the allotment of cases, according to the Judges, Misra has assigned high profile cases to judges lower than the top five judges in the Supreme Court.
This unprecedented rebellion by the Supreme Court of India has raised a lot of heads. The four senior Judges Justice Chelameswar, Justice Gogoi, Justice Kurian and Justice Lokur announced that the administration of the Supreme Court was not in order. After these bold claims, the Supreme Court Judges released a letter they wrote to Chief Justice of India Misra. The letter details the problems and issues faced by these judges due to Misra’s decisions.
On Monday, the Supreme Court announced the composition of a five judge Constitution Bench headed by CJI Misra. But the Bench that will hear eight crucial cases on Wednesday did not feature any of the four judges who rebelled against the CJI.
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will hear cases related to the validity of Section 377, Aadhaar, the validity of adultery law under the IPC, entry of women into the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala and four other crucial cases. Justices J. Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M. B. Lokur and Kurian Joseph were all left out of the Constitution Bench.
