On Wednesday, former Madras and Calcutta High Court Judge Justice C. S. Karnan was released from prison. Mr. Karnan served six months imprisonment for contempt of court.

Karnan’s Counsel Mathew J. Nedumpara said, “Justice Karnan has been released from Presidency Jail.” In a statement Nedumpara said, “It is a matter of great pleasure, nay, relief, that Justice Karnan will be released from Presidency Jail, Kolkata, tomorrow, on the completion of six months of imprisonment.”

Karnan was awarded his prison term by the Apex Court on the 9th of May. But he remained untraceable for more than a month. The police finally nabbed him on the 20th of June. Karnan was lodged at the Presidency Jail in Kolkata.

The Supreme Court released a contempt of court notice in February against Karnan. The allegations stated he degraded the Judicial Institution. A seven judge bench presided over the case. The final verdict stated, “The actions of Shri Justice C.S. Karnan constituted the grossest and gravest action of contempt of court. He is therefore liable to be punished for his unsavoury actions and behaviour.”
