In Kerala’s Malappuram region, at least 22 people, including seven children, were killed when a double decker boat overturned and sank near a beach.
The fatal accident happened on the evening 7:00 P.M., of the 7th of May, Sunday, near Tuvalthiram beach in the Tanur area of. The number of deceased is likely to increase, as the rescue operation is underway. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are conducting searches for those missing. As per sources, there were 40 passengers in the boat with tickets, whereas many others boarded the boat without any ticket.
A case has been registered against the boat’s owner for culpable homicide, confirmed the police. Notably, the boat was not having a certificate of safety and was operating illegally.
Meanwhile, upon hearing the tragic accident, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi condoled the deaths and announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to the families of each victim.
In a tweet, Mr. Narendra Modi said, “Pained by the loss of lives due to the boat mishap in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF (Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund) would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased.”
Besides PM Narendra Modi, Congress leaders and former Wayanad Member of Parliament (MP) Mr. Rahul Gandhi also condoled the death of people in the accident.
