The Maharashtra Bhushan Award ceremony turned deadly after eleven people died of heat stroke and close to 120 were hospitalized.

On the 16th of April, Sunday, a grand Maharashtra Bhushan Award ceremony was organized at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai.  The event attended by lakhs was conducted with an outdoor arrangement at Kharghar International Corporate Park Ground, under the scorching heat and over 40 degrees Celsius temperature.  The state government organized event started at 8:00 A.M., and was scheduled till 1:00 P.M.  The event was organized to give an award to Dattatreya Narayan Dharmadhikari,  popularly known as Appasaheb Dharmadhikari, a social worker.  The event was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

However, the event turned deadly, after many suffered heat stroke due to the scorching sun overhead and suffocation due to the gathering of lakhs of people.  The Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed the death of 11 people, including elderly women and said over 120 people are hospitalized and are undergoing treatment.  Notably, of the 120 people admitted  in hospital, a few with health issues like blood pressure, diabetes and others are said to be critical, which could lead to a rise in the number of fatalities.

Meanwhile, Mr. Eknath Shinde, the State CM also announced an ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakh to the kin of those, who died at the event.
